FlockFinder FDX Reader – Everything You Need to Know

We built the FlockFinder FDX Reader to work seamlessly with the FlockFinder app. Whether you’re logging treatments, weights, or movements, scanning tags makes everything faster, easier, and more accurate.

🔖 Tag Compatibility

The FlockFinder FDX Reader works with FDX (Full Duplex) EID tags, the most common type used on UK sheep farms.

It will work with any livestock, including sheep, cattle, and goats, as long as they are fitted with FDX tags.

Not sure which tags you use?
Ask your tag supplier. They will confirm whether your tags are FDX or HDX.

⚠️ The FlockFinder reader does not support HDX (Half Duplex) tags.

If you are using HDX tags, see compatible reader options below.

Please note: we cannot guarantee compatibility with Shearwell tags, as they may contain a mix of FDX and HDX chips.

📟 Compatible EID Readers

FlockFinder works with EID stick and panel readers that use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

Below is a list of currently supported readers.

✅ Readers That Work with FlockFinder

Shearwell

  • SDL Stick Reader

Datamars / Tru-Test

  • SRS2i Stick Reader
  • XRS2i Stick Reader
  • XRP2i Panel Reader

⚠️ Important:
Only models with a lowercase “i” are compatible (e.g. SRS2i, not SRS2).
Models without the “i” use older Bluetooth and will not connect.

Gallagher (New in v2.26.0)

  • HR4 (BLE-enabled variants)
  • HR5 (BLE-enabled variants)

FlockFinder

  • FlockFinder FDX Reader

❌ Readers That Do Not Work

These use older Bluetooth (Bluetooth Classic), which is not currently supported:

  • Datamars / Tru-Test SRS2, XRS2, XRP2 (without “i”)
  • Older Datamars / Tru-Test models (SRS, XRS, XRP)
  • Allflex LPR, RS, AWL
  • Gallagher HR3 and older
  • Most Agrident readers (AWR / APR range in Classic mode)

If you’re using one of these, you will need to upgrade or contact us to discuss options.

Getting started takes seconds:

  2. Press the button on the back to power on
  3. Open the FlockFinder app
  4. Tap the Bluetooth icon on the homepage

Once connected, it will automatically reconnect every time you power it on.

🐑 What Does the FDX Reader Do?

The FlockFinder reader removes the need to manually enter tag numbers.

  • Scan the animal’s EID tag
  • The app instantly opens that animal’s profile
  • Log treatments, weights, movements, or notes

One scan, and you’re ready to record.

🎯 Why Use the FlockFinder Reader?

  • Fully integrated with the FlockFinder app
  • Fast and accurate data capture
  • Lightweight and pocket-sized
  • Simple Bluetooth setup
  • Cost-effective hardware
  • Built by farmers, for farmers

Whether you’re scanning five animals or five hundred, it helps you move faster and stay organised.

⚠️ Common Issue — Incorrect Tag Numbers

If your reader shows incorrect tag numbers in the app:

  • Update to the latest version of FlockFinder
  • Try scanning again

If the issue continues, contact support with:

  • A photo of the physical tag
  • A screenshot of the scanned result
  • Your reader model
